Mexican Immigration and Its Effects on Families Based on Two of Reyna
Grande's Works
Abstract: The main purpose of this research is to highlight how Mexican immigration to the U.S affects both those who emigrate as well as those who stay in Mexico. In multiple Chicana immigrant novels, the writers have focused on the experience once an immigrant arrives to the United States, but Reyna Grande shifts the perspective and focuses on the family members affected. This research project is divided into three parts: the first consists of the historical context about Mexican immigration. The second phase will discuss the process of acculturation and assimilation and how this affects families who emigrate to the United States. The effects of immigration on family separation will also be explored. In the third phase, two works of Reyna Grande will be analyzed: The memoir The Distance Between Us (2013) and the novel Across a Hundred Mountains (2006). In both works, she writes about the issue of immigration and the impact it has on family members who remain behind. It should be noted that her memoir The Distance Between Us is based on her own experience of immigration to the United States.
