MLO 3: Reflective Narrative
SPAN 307, 322, 301S, 304, and 306 are the courses that fulfilled MLO 3. For this MLO I’ve provided two samples: one is a final essay for SPAN 304 (Intro to Hispanic Lit ), and the other is a presentation based on my service learning for SPAN 301S (Service Learning in the Chicano/Latino Community). For the final essay I did in SPAN 304, I had to analyze a piece of work by a writer we studied in class, and make a comment on how this particular piece of work reflects the literary movement the author belonged to. In my essay I focused on the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo and his short story "No oyes ladrar los perros." Juan Rulfo belonged to the literary movement called magic realism. In my essay I focus on the central theme of the short story and how that theme affects the main characters but more importantly I emphasize the different social classes and how the poor are the ones affected due to the era of the "porfiriato." For SPAN 301S, I decided to add my final presentation as a sample because it reflects the activities I did in my service learning site, and what I learned about being part of a community. Besides talking about my service learning site, I also talk about the city of Salinas and the importance of agriculture in the Central Coast of California. This experience had an impact on me and a cultural shock as well that I have explained under the "service learning" tab.
