MLO 4: Reflective Narrative
The only class that fulfills this MLO is HCOM 324 African American Narratives. For this MLO I’ve provided two samples: a presentation based on a section of a book and a final essay that demonstrates my completion of the MLO. For most of this course the professor focused on helping us think critically about the importance of the “word,” especially in African American stories. This class helped me see African American stories in a different light, not just literature, but also music, film and documentaries. For example, African American singers are using their platform to express themselves on light of our current president and problems arising because of that. It is so inspiring to see African American singers, artists, etc… using their power through their art to inspire the nation and open their eyes to the real issues. Below I’ve attached my final essay for the course because I think it represents my growth and my knowledge on what I understood of African American themes. They are issues and themes that are very prevalent today. Although there are major differences within the African American culture and the Hispanic culture there are also many similarities and because of those similarities, I found this class intriguing. I will definitely keep on reading and listening to the stories of African Americans. The other evidence I provided is a presentation I completed at the beginning of the semester. In this presentation I was able to develop some important aspects within a book-Home to Harlem. One of the most challenging things about this MLO was understanding that I don’t need to have an opinion about a topic all the time. I was very understanding of this as I was respecting the African American students in this class and I was more interested in learning about their experience as African Americans in this country.
