Masterpieces of Hispanic Literature-Latin America & the Caribbean: This course covers MLO 3- Literacy and Cultural Knowledge. This was my first literature course at CSUMB and I was very excited for it since I am a bibliophile (book lover) . I fell more in love with literature and this course helped me decide to make literature my emphasis in the near future. During this class, we did a lot of reading, class discussions and towards the end of the semester, each person presented on a different author and a chosen piece. Most of the authors during this era based their writings on a social, political or historical context. This course helped me greatly to make a comparison with my SPAN 307 (History of Mex) class. I was able to add positive contributions to the class discussions. We read so many authors and stories. My favorites were the “Popul Vuh,” which explains the creation of the Mayan. We read a short excerpt in class but in the end, I found the whole book and read it over summer break. It helped me understand native American culture and Mesoamerican culture. It’s a fascinating book. I mostly liked the poems about José Martí, and how he talks about the fight for independence in his country, Cuba, among other writers, such as: Manuel Gutierrez Najera and Jose Asuncion Silva. I learned about the different literary movements and how they impacted a generation of writers. Personally, I enjoyed learning about the author's life and how that was relevant in their short stories or poems. Dr. Urioste taught this course and he helped me to critically analyze literature. As evidence I've provided a presentation I did at the end of the semester. This presentation is an accumulation and summary of the material I learned in class about analyzing and synthesizing literature.
