MLO 1: Reflective Narrative
SPAN 301, 301S, 304, 305, 306, and 345 helped me fulfill MLO 1. Class discussions were an integral part for all these courses more than other MLO. These courses helped me prepare for other courses not related to the Major, and they gave me a boost of confidence. For SPAN 301 (Composition & Oral Practice), Dr. Oliva gave us a variety of activities were we were able to think critically, as well as working individually but also with a group. The thing I enjoyed about this course was how Dr. Oliva would tell us when we were using an incorrect word/phrase, and then he would tell us the correct way depending on the context, and that helped a lot. As a sample for this MLO, I’ve provided a presentation I did at the end of the semester with a classmate, that I think encompasses all the skills I learned in the other courses. The presentation was something sort of critical that made the audience think and reflect. My partner, and I focused on a TED Talk that talked about journalism in Mexico, and we compared it to the United States. At the beginning of the class, we asked our classmates a couple of questions to get them thinking, and this helped them understand the context of our theme. SPAN 301S (Service Learning in the Chicano/Latino Community) is one of my favorite classes to this day because we analyzed, and compared many poems, and a memoir dealing with immigration & identity. The texts we read, and discussed in class helped me better understand the community I was helping. I learned the difference between volunteering, and service. For SPAN 304 (Intro to Hispanic Literature), and SPAN 306 (Culture and Civilization of Spanish Latin America), I was able to make multiple connections regarding culture and literature. I appreciate the mini-presentations we did for SPAN 306, as they helped me answer many questions and doubts, but at the same time I was able to hear on someone else’s opinion. They also helped me prep for the exams. SPAN 304 opened the doors of literature for me as we delved into the different literary movements. I didn’t know so many existed such as: the mysticism, and naturalism. This course overlapped with SPAN 306 because many of the writers we talked about were either controversial or political. They were the type of writers that expressed themselves despite the consequences. or maybe they knew the consequences but decided to speak out to help others.
