Spanish for The Professions: This course helped me fulfill MLO 2-Linguistics. This class helped me gain confidence in my communication skills thanks to Dr. Oliva, who taught the course. Oliva, helped me gain insight into the Latin American world of business. Even though, it was a class for the “professions” such as education, law, medicine, its primary focus was business oriented. In this class I learned about work unions and how they protect workers, ranging from professors to businesses and many fields. I learned a lot of vocabulary and since that class I’ve kept track of all the new words in a vocabulary journal. It helps me keep reference for my other courses as well. A lot of class participation, discussions and debates occurred during the semester which gave us an insight about the business world but it also helped us gain a more cohesive and sophisticated language. Sometimes it was hard and I had to be careful with the words I chose as I spoke. I also learned that the meaning of words vary from country to country or region. That part was the most interesting to learn about, it fascinated me. Since Dr. Oliva is from Argentina, we had the incredible opportunity to learn about his country and politics, which related to the course. There were a lot of differences between Argentina, the U.S and Mexico. On a typical day we would watch a short video, then the professor would pose a critical question to the class, which we had to discuss in groups or partners and then we would discuss as a large group. Every now and then we would review and practice grammar. I enjoyed the way this course was structured and the way Dr. Oliva taught it. He’s an excellent professor.
