MLO 2: Reflective Narrative
LING 392, SPAN 305, SPAN 301, and SPAN 345 are the courses that helped me fulfill MLO 2. As samples for this MLO I’ve provided a diagram were I labeled The Vocal Tract (LING 392), and an exam about different situations dealing with linguistics/bilingualism (SPAN 345). The Vocal Tract sample is a diagram of the movement of sounds a human creates when speaking. The Vocal Tract can be characterized as the area from the nose and the nasal cavity down to the vocal cord, located deep in the throat. Understanding the vocal tract for this course was important as I was able to accurately distinguish sounds, and I know from what location in the mouth they come from. The lips, tongue, and jaw are the easiest parts of the vocal tract that can be controlled voluntarily. I have to admit this class was a bit of a challenge since language has so many rules. For example, the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) was something that took a lot of practice because I had to transcribe English words into IPA. It was hard for me to memorize the symbols, so I had to practice a lot until I had them memorized. Overall, this class made me appreciate language so much more, and how intricate language can really be. For SPAN 345, I took Dr. Oliva and I’ve taken him for all my linguistics courses, except LING 392, and he is an excellent professor. I especially enjoy his classes because he gets us to think critically, and to apply many things we might learn in class, in our everyday lives. Up to this point, in SPAN 345, we’ve looked into different aspects of the brain and how it connect to language learning, and acquisition. This course has surprised me everyday.
