LING 392:Nature of Language & Language acquisition
Course Description: introduces the scientific study of language, which includes theoretical concepts (e.g. structural linguistics, sociolinguistics, language development in first and second language acquisition) and application of linguistics in reading and writing development. Students develop a knowledge base in linguistics, phonemic awareness, and syntax, and apply it in real-world educational settings.
Nature of Language & Language acquisition helped me fulfill MLO 2-Linguistics. This course was one of my hardest classes at CSUMB because it was fast paced and some of the readings used concepts I had never heard of. Overall, it was an interesting class. Most of the students in this class were Liberal Studies Majors, and Professor Gage geared her teaching towards preparing us for the CBEST or CSET. During the semester we discussed and learned about the terminology of words, their roots. I was able to determine speech sounds, patterns and word formation, as well as syntax of words and meanings pertaining to a specific rule. Additionally, we discussed theories of monolingual, second and multilingual language acquisition and based on those theories we had to write a final paper, analyzing how our case study/participant fit into one of those theories and support it with evidence. My favorite part of the class was when I learned how language changes and its implications based on language variation and that it might be due to where a person comes from. So, in theory the way a person pronounces a certain word has to do with a dialect from a region and not that they don’t know how to say the word. With that in mind, as a class we were able to see how society impacts a person's language. As evidence, I’ve provided a quiz where I had to break down a sentence into its parts of: determiner, adjective, noun, transitive verb/intransitive verb, prepositional phrase, among other parts. And below the tree diagram, I’ve provided a brief explanation as to why I named each part. Unfortunately, I am not able to provide any assignments or my final essay due to Dr. Gage having a strict policy of us keeping any graded work. what I've provided below is a quiz, which is the only assignment I got back. Now that I’ve completed this course I feel more compelled to pay attention to words and their parts.
